District 16 school wins grant award – “Sun Focus Today” – Monday, Jan. 25, 2010

The minds of students in Spring Lake Park will blossom in new ways, and so will their crops of vegetables and flowers. District 16’s Learning Alternatives Community School (LACS) is one of 36 schools that was recently selected from more than 200 youth gardening programs nationwide to receive an award. LACS is for learners between the ages of 12 and 21 who are seeking success in an alternative setting. A full-time day program is offered, as well as a program in which students are enrolled in high school during the day and attend LACS after school. Science teacher Sada Ganske said students helped with the grant proposal, which was submitted to the National Gardening Association last fall. Recipients of the 2009 Hooked on Hydroponics Award will soon receive a hydroponics gardening kit from The Grow Store in Lakewood, Colorado. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water without soil. In addition to the kit, LACS will receive curriculum that Ganske said is tied to Minnesota science standards. Some topics include genetics, life cycles and ecosystems. LACS has had an outdoor gardening program for about six years, and students will start planting seeds in March. Gardening will begin with indoor produce on a smaller scale, such as lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes, and the program will expand to a larger variety of produce and flowers. Summer school students will help tend the garden.

The Anoka County Community Health Department is sponsoring a series of free H1N1 flu immunization clinics at the Anoka County Human Service Center, 1201 89th Ave. N.E., Suite 315, in Blaine.

If you’ve missed the immunizations earlier this month, three other clinics will be held this week:
- 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26
- 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28
- 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 30

The clinics are for people of all ages who have no or limited health insurance. No appointments are required for these clinics. People who have adequate health insurance are encouraged to visit their private clinic to receive immunizations. Seasonal flu immunizations also will be available at the clinics. Charges may apply for the seasonal flu vaccine only. For more information, call the Anoka County Immunization Hotline or visit online: 763-323-6100 or www.readyanokacounty.us.
