Breast Reconstruction

Published by Garden under Uncategorized

Surgical breast reconstruction is one of the most humane and useful operative applications in the plastic surgery industry.  For women who have endured the loss of a breast, the trauma is extensive and affects the mind, body and spirit equally.  Reconstruction mammoplasty, as it is typically called by doctors, can repair or replace damaged or missing breasts due to a wide range of causations and can also restore the psycho-emotional health of the recipient to provide true mindbody healing.

Breast reconstruction is most often associated with breast cancer patients.  In the past, women who have lost an entire breast due to mastectomy, or a partial breast due to lumpectomy, are typically left mourning the loss without hope for regaining a full anatomy.  Currently, in most developed areas of the world, reconstruction mammoplasty is offered as standard treatment along with breast removal or lump removal procedures.  Some women enjoy the benefit of immediate reconstruction during the mastectomy operation and never even have to wake to the sight of a missing breast.  However, other women may elect to wait, or be forced to wait, for a reconstruction technique to be used and may have to deal with the emotional consequences of their anatomical loss.

In the United States, breast reconstruction surgery has been guaranteed to women through legislation, forcing insurance companies to pay the substantial costs of rebuilding a missing breast.  This is wonderful for American women and has increased the post operative quality of life for countless ladies who would not have otherwise had the financial resources to pay for plastic surgery on their own.

There are many options for reconstructive mammoplasty, using prosthetic breast implants, as well as completely organic tissue approaches.  While implant based breast reconstruction remains the most popular and successful procedure, some women prefer to harvest their own natural bodily tissue to rebuild a lost breast.  The three main techniques used to accomplish this goal include the TRAM flap method, the LDM flap procedure and the free tissue graft.

The Tram method stands for transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous breast reconstruction and uses tissue harvested from the abdominal region.  This is the most common of the organic tissue reconstruction techniques and ads the benefit of a cosmetic tummy tuck to the operation.  Since the abdominal muscle is never actually detached, the tissue stands an excellent chance of fully acclimating to the breast region and growing healthily.

The LDM flap, or latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous approach, utilizes a section of the back and flank to rebuild the missing breast.  This approach has become more popular in recent years and also stands a great chance for successful tissue growth.  Being that this harvested region is smaller than the TRAM tissue site, the procedure can only be used to fully build a smaller sized breast and is sometimes used in conjunction with a small prosthetic implant.

The least common, most difficult and riskiest procedure is the free tissue graft technique.  In this operation, tissue is actually completely detached from any number of areas on the body and reattached to form a new breast.  This surgery involves reconnecting blood vessels and neurological structures, so the chances for complications increases considerably compared to the other two more common approaches.

The miracle of breast reconstruction allows a second chance for women who have suffered an incredible bodily loss.  It is crucial to understand that reconstruction mammoplasty is also used to treat other conditions, besides breast cancer, including repair of mastectomy due to juvenile hypertrophy, repair of traumatic breast injuries and construction of a breast in cases of complete breast hypoplasia.  To learn more about the full range of reconstruction options available to you or a loved one, consider talking to a caring and qualified plastic surgeon.  There is no doubt that breast reconstruction is yet another example of why plastic surgery remains the most enlightened form of modern medicine, being that it alone treats the entire individual; mind, body and spirit.
